All the students of Holmes have completed the DIBELS assessment. DIBELS is a way to do a quick check of a student's fluency skills and comprehension. This truly is just a quick indicator, but it does give us a place to begin our instruction with the students. The students are really so cooperative during this time. Our reading specialist, Mrs. Cotterall, does a marvelous job of organizing this huge task. Almost 500 kids take their turn and that in itself is quite impressive! It is a joy to hear kids read out loud. They really do want to do their best and show how their skills are improving through the years. I can't begin to express how important it is for you to have your child read to you at home. You MUST take the responsibility of practicing with your young readers. Nothing compares to having a parent read with their child at home - you are modeling the importance of reading and they are getting valuable practice. If you want your child to be a better reader then take the time to read with them at home....it's really quite simple!
